Officer Michael Gusman was recently named October 2025 Officer of the Month by the Kona Crime Prevention Committee.

On June 12, Officer Gusman responded to a call from a suicidal man who intended to provoke police into shooting him. Despite limited information, Gusman located the man, engaged him calmly, and built rapport. The man eventually surrendered peacefully, revealing he had a pellet gun and was overwhelmed by personal issues. Officer Gusman transported the man to Kona Community Hospital and stayed with him until he received medical care.

Officer Gusman was praised for his compassion and professionalism.

As Officer of the Month, Officer Gusman is now eligible to be considered for the 2026 Officer of the Year award.
