Nā‘ālehu Man Charged Following Violent Traffic-Related Incidents

31-year-old Pomaikai Olson, of Nā‘ālehu was charged with multiple offenses stemming from a violent crime spree in Volcano over the weekend.

After conferring with the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, Olson was charged with the following offenses:

  • Two counts first-degree robbery
  • Three counts first-degree theft of motor vehicle
  • Three counts unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle
  • Impersonating a police officer
  • Five counts accident involving damage to vehicle of property
  • Three counts second-degree reckless endangering
  • Two counts fourth-degree criminal property damage
  • Unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle
  • Two counts first-degree terroristic threatening
  • Attempted first-degree burglary
  • Duty upon striking unattended vehicle/property
  • Second-degree negligent injury
  • Accident involving substantial bodily injury
  • Driving without a valid driver’s license

His bail was set at$592,000. He currently remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Hilo District court this afternoon.

Olson’s charges stem from a series of events including allegedly carjacking a woman at gunpoint, striking multiple vehicles, and other attempted carjackings before being restrained by bystanders. Police say the weapon was an airsoft pistol resembling a real gun.
