Kevin Durant has agreed to a two-year, $90 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets, following his midsummer trade from the Phoenix Suns. The deal includes a player option in 2027-28, according to Durant’s business partner and Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman, who confirmed the news to ESPN’s Shams Charania on Sunday: “BREAKING: Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant has agreed to a two-year, $90 million contract extension with the franchise, his business partner and Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman tells ESPN. The new deal includes a player option in 2027-28.”
Durant’s historic extension officially surpasses LeBron James for the highest career earnings in NBA history at $598.2 million, stemming from current and future salaries. James has career earnings of $583.9 million; Durant’s current contract is worth three years and $144.7 million, per Charania.
Now 38 years old, Durant could’ve earned up to a $120 million max extension but instead gave up money in order to remain in Houston long-term. Earlier this month, he expressed his intent to extend his stay in Houston, saying, “I can’t tell you when that will happen, but I do see it happening. Just seeing the quick progression of this franchise from where it was right after that James Harden, Chris Paul era. Seeing with Ime (Udoka) got here and how he turned it around so fast. I have some connections here around the organization, people I work with around the league already … felt organic and natural coming into the gym and being a Houston Rocket for the first time .. It feels amazing to be back here in Houston, with friends and relationships I’ve built since coming to Texas. Always felt this was a place I could settle in and live actually. Never thought about it, but I always say Houston is a good place to move to, so for this opportunity to come around, it felt natural and right.”
Durant spent over two seasons with Phoenix before he was dealt to the Rockets in a blockbuster trade that sent Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, and five second-round picks to the Suns. The transaction marked largest trade in NBA history, with seven teams were involved.
Durant has averaged 25 points per game across 16 seasons, which also makes him the only player in NBA history to maintain that scoring average with four different teams. Throughout his career he has earned two NBA championships, one league MVP award, two Finals MVPs, 15 All-Star selections, and a record-setting four Olympic gold medals in men’s basketball.
