Hawai‘i Island police have identified the man killed in a January 15 two-vehicle collision near Highway 19 and Hikina Place in Hilo as 26-year-old Michael Taione of Maui.

Taione’s Ford F150 crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Chevy Silverado driven by a 46-year-old Laupāhoehoe woman.

Despite life-saving efforts, Taione was pronounced dead later that day.

The Silverado driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released.

Speed and alcohol are suspected factors.

An autopsy has been ordered, while the investigation continues.

Police ask that anyone with information regarding this collision to contact Officer Joshua Rodby-Tomas at (808) 961-2339 or via email at Joshua.Rodby-Tomas@hawaiicounty.gov.
