T-Mobile Park home to the Seattle Mariners. Seattle^ Washington / USA - March 28th 2019

The Seattle Mariners are investing in their future, agreeing to an eight-year, $95 million contract with top prospect Colt Emerson—before he’s even played a single Major League game. The deal, which includes a ninth-year option, a full no-trade clause, and incentives that could push its value beyond $130 million, sets a new benchmark for players yet to debut.

At just 20 years old, Emerson has quickly emerged as one of baseball’s most promising young talents. Originally selected 22nd overall in the 2023 MLB Draft, Emerson impressed early in his professional career and continued to build momentum.

Ranked No. 7 overall by Baseball America entering the 2026 season, he has climbed prospect rankings with consistent production and rapid development. Across multiple minor league levels in 2025, he posted a strong .285/.383/.458 slash line while showcasing improved defense at shortstop—his primary position, though he’s also spent time at second and third base. He began the 2026 season at Triple-A Tacoma, where he’s already made an impact in limited action. Over his minor league career, he’s compiled a .288 batting average with 23 home runs, 130 RBIs, and 37 stolen bases.

Despite a solid spring training performance, Emerson didn’t break camp with the major league roster. With starting shortstop J. P. Crawford sidelined by a shoulder injury, Leo Rivas has been filling in, though struggles at the plate and uncertainty around Crawford’s return could open the door for Emerson’s call-up sooner rather than later.
