The Cincinnati Bengals wasted little time securing their newest addition, finalizing a one-year, $28 million extension with Dexter Lawrence II after he passed his physical. The deal, confirmed by Win Sports Group, keeps the standout defensive tackle under contract through the 2028 season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported: “Compensation update: Now that he has passed his physical and the trade is official, newly-acquired DT Dexter Lawerence is signing a one-year, $28 million contract extension with the Bengals, per @WinSportsGroup So in the end, Lawrence gets the trade he wanted while being contractually tied to Cincinnati for the next three seasons.”
Lawrence arrived in Cincinnati via a headline-grabbing trade with the New York Giants, who sent the three-time Pro Bowler to the Bengals in exchange for the No. 10 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The move came after contract negotiations between Lawrence and New York stalled, prompting his trade request following seven seasons with the franchise.
Cincinnati’s leadership made it clear they view Lawrence as a cornerstone piece. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said, “We are excited to add Dexter to our team,” adding, “He has been a dominant player in the league since he was drafted, and he will be a tremendous presence on the field and in our locker room.” Director of player personnel Duke Tobin echoed that sentiment, stating, “Dexter fits the vision we have on our defense and will also elevate others around him,” while emphasizing confidence in the team’s offseason additions.
At 28, Lawrence brings an impressive résumé that includes Pro Bowl selections from 2022 to 2024 and second-team All-Pro honors in 2022 and 2023. Over 109 career games, he has totaled 341 tackles, 30.5 sacks, 40 tackles for loss, and 103 quarterback hits.
However, his most recent season marked a noticeable dip in production, with just 31 tackles and 0.5 sacks across 17 games. Some of that decline may be tied to an elbow injury that has lingered over the past two seasons, as well as reduced effectiveness when lining up at nose tackle. That downturn has raised questions about whether Cincinnati is taking a significant gamble by committing top-tier money to a player coming off a quieter stretch.
Still, the Bengals appear willing to bet on Lawrence rediscovering his peak form as they push to turn around a defense that has struggled during three consecutive playoff absences. The team has already prioritized reinforcing the trenches, adding pass rusher Boye Mafe and veteran lineman Jonathan Allen in free agency, along with safety Bryan Cook. This aggressive approach signals urgency in building a stronger roster around franchise quarterback Joe Burrow.
Meanwhile, the Giants now hold two top-10 selections (Nos. 5 and 10) as they pivot toward the future. Whether Lawrence can return to elite form will ultimately determine if this high-stakes move pays off for Cincinnati.
