Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a Kahalu‘u Beach Park drowning involving 76‑year‑old Daniel Vasquez of Kailua‑Kona.
On Wednesday, officers responded after a witness reported finding Vasquez unresponsive while bodysurfing.
Ocean safety personnel and bystanders brought him ashore and began CPR with an AED.
Hawai‘i County Fire Department transported him to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have opened a coroner’s inquest and ordered an autopsy; no foul play is suspected at this time.
