During the week of April 20 through April 26, 2026, Hawai’i Island police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far in 2026, there have been 273 DUI arrests compared with 302 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.60 percent.
The Hawaiʻi County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 317 major crashes so far this year, compared with 331 major crashes during the same time last year, a decrease of 4.23 percent.
As of April 26, there have been 5 fatal crashes, resulting in 5 fatalities compared with 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities for the same time last year. This is a decrease of 50 percent for fatal crashes and a decrease of 54.55 percent for fatalities.
