The State Department of Health statistics show that both the age groups of 20 to 39 and 40 to 59 continue to have a higher number of people infected with COVID-19 than those under 20 or over 60.  But the percentage of those who need hospitalization is markedly greater in the over-60 group:  just over 30%.

As of May 25, with 643 cases (today the state has 651, but the data on the state web site for ages and hospitalizations is as of last Monday), here’s the information:

Ages Number Number hospitalized % hospitalized
0-19 34 1 2.9%
20-39 214 8 3.7%
40-59 226 23 10.2%
60+ 169 51 30.2%

The data highlights how important it is for those over 60 and especially those with any underlying health condition to be especially cautious, and for family members and friends to help protect those people.

Age and COVID hospitalizations as of May 25, 2020
