Gov. David Ige on Thursday approved Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s proposal to re-open designated indoor/outdoor businesses and operations, including fitness facilities and bars. The businesses/operations will open with limitations starting on June 19.

They include:

  • Education and care facilities
  • Indoor attractions (including bowling alleys, arcades, museums, theaters)
  • Outdoor organized team sports (two phases, with phase 1 beginning June 19)
  • Fitness facilities
  • Bars
  • Film and television production (approved re-opening as of June 5)

These reopenings apply only to the City and County of Honolulu.  In the Governor’s May 19 proclamation, he said he or the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HIEMA) must approve each Mayor’s plans for reopening.  He said it was up to the Mayors to determine at what stage of readiness each county is.

On the Big Island, restaurants, food courts, hair and nail salons, churches, the Hilo Skeet Range, Hilo Muni Golf Course,  and other facilities have gotten the go-ahead to reopen.  Mayor Kim’s most recent proclamation has swimming pools still closed, but more announcements regarding reopenings are expected.
