Some states seeing increase in COVID after holiday weekend and gatherings

COVID-19 cases are increasing in several states, with a number of them reaching some of their highest averages since the pandemic began, whether the state’s overall total is low or high:  Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kentucky, New Mexico, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

The Washington Post is reporting that in Texas, North and South Carolina, California, Oregon, Arkansas, Mississippi, Utah and Arizona, there are an increasing number of patients in the hospital since the Memorial Day weekend because of coronavirus infections. The spikes generally began in the past couple weeks.

Hawaii state officials have expressed concern about what happens when travel from the mainland reopens and are grappling with how to ensure Hawaii does not end up with an unmanageable spike in cases.  Other states have implemented plans to have incoming travelers test prior to coming or upon arrival, with different quarantine requirements based on the traveler’s voluntary compliance with testing.
