Today in Hilo, there will be a peaceful demonstration in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.  The event will be at the soccer fields by Bayfront from noon until 3.

On Monday, in Waimea, people are invited to gather in front of the Foodland from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.

On Thursday, June 18 in Waimea, people are invited to gather in front of the Foodland from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m.

All those going to gatherings or marches are reminded to wear masks and bring snacks, refreshments, water bottles, sun and rain gear,  and musical instruments.

The CDC has now issued new guidelines for those who will be going to gatherings, both for the organizers and those individuals attending.  CDC Director Robert Redfield and Jay C. Butler, M.D., CDC’s Deputy Director of Infectious Diseases and COVID-19 Response Incident Manager, said Friday that wearing masks, staying physically apart if possible, and frequent hand washing is critical to keep people safe and the COVID count low.

On Saturday in Kailua-Kona, more than a hundred people gathered and walked in the area from Target through Kailua Village.  The event was organized by 14-year-old Cody Jones, who will be entering Kealakehe High School when it reopens.  Jones invited people to join in a peaceful march and sign waving in honor of George Floyd, who died in Minneapolis when a police officer knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.  At Saturday’s event, there was silence for 8 minutes and 46 minutes in memory of Mr. Floyd.
