Several hundred people have RSVP’d for a flotilla event being publicized on social media for the 4th of July holiday at an East O‘ahu beach, according to the State Department of Land and Natural Resources.  DLNR says not only is attendance at this gathering illegal, it is extremely irresponsible in light of 25 new O’ahu COVID-19  cases just today and 280 new cases since June 1.

Health officials nationwide are warning that large gatherings, with people without masks and not distancing from each other, are the likely cause of outbreaks of COVID-19 throughout the country.   Although Hawaii has among the lowest case counts in the country, the increasing COVID-19 outbreaks continue to be a concern.  State Health Director Bruce Anderson said on Friday morning that there are outbreaks on O’ahu in Honolulu, Kailua, Mililani, Pearl City, Wahiawa, Waialua, Waianae, Kaneohe, Waimanalo, and Waipahu.  Hawaiian Airlines confirmed that 8 of its employees have tested positive for COVID-19.

Current Emergency Rules and Orders prohibit the gathering of large groups of people, and additionally, no marine permits have been issued for this event.

DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement  (DOCARE) Chief Jason Redulla asked that people act responsibly and not go to any such large gatherings.   DOCARE will enforce all emergency rules and orders.

Violations of Hawai‘i’s Emergency Rules and Orders are misdemeanors, punishable by up to $5000 fine and one-year imprisonment.
