The State Department of Health report for noon on Tuesday, September 1:  the state has 181 new cases of confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the state’s total to 8,653 cumulative cases, with 5,945 active cases.

There are 4 more deaths in the report, 1 on the Big Island and 3 on O’ahu.  The Big Island has now lost 3 veterans who were residents at the Yukio Otsuku State Veterans Home.

The Big Island’s case count jumped by 19.   There are 190 active cases on the island, with a cumulative 383, the highest of any of the neighbor islands.  The State Department of Health is supposed to speak with each of these people, find out where they have been in the last week and with whom they have been in contact, and contact those people to let them know they’ve been exposed.

The County is urging people to get tested.  There is testing today at UH Hilo Gymnasium until 2 p.m.  Wednesday, there is testing at Pahoa Regional Park from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.  There will be additional testing in Pahoa, most likely this Friday, and in Kea’au most likely on Thursday and Saturday.

There will be an update later today about current hospitalizations on the Big Island.  As of Monday, there were 16 people in Hilo Medical Center, a decrease from the previous day.  Neither Kona Community Hospital nor North Hawaii Hospital reported any hospitalizations on Monday.

Kaua’i has no new cases.  Maui County has 5 new cases.  O’ahu has added 157.

There is mass testing going on on O’ahu this week and next, with the Federal Government’s assistance.  According to Governor David Ige today around noon, the positive percentage of the “surge tests” is around 1%.   The state’s test rate has hovered between 5% and 10% for the last few weeks.
