Maui Now is reporting that the 56-year-old man who was attacked by a shark in waters off Maui on Tuesday, Dec. 8,  has died from his injuries.

The man was paddling out at Honolua Bay around 7:45 a.m. and was around 20 yards offshore when the attack occurred.  The State Department of Land and Natural Resources closed the beach.

The WSL Women’s Professional Surfing Competition, which had begun its competition at the Bay on Monday, and was scheduled to get underway again that day, suspended the event.

According to the DLNR’s Shark Incident list, the last fatality from a shark encounter was in May, 2019, also off Maui.
