Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that 21 year-old Shaycen Sabino of Hilo, was charged with abuse of a family household member in relation to incidents that occurred at a Banyan Drive apartment on April 2, 2022 and April 4, 2022.

As the Complaint alleges, Sabino was charged with 4 offenses including Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member (physically abuse a family or household member by impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood by applying pressure on the throat or neck), Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member (physically abuse a family or household member in the presence of a minor under the age of fourteen years old), and two counts of misdemeanor Abuse of a Family or Household Member. Both variations of Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member offenses are class C felony offenses punishable by a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison.

The investigation was initiated by Officer Roland Kuamo‘o, South Hilo Patrol, and the felony investigation was handled by Officer Corey Kaneko and Detective Gavin Kagimoto, Area I Juvenile Aid Section, Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Suzanna Tiapula.

The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
