Hurricane Darby is forecast to pass south of Hawaiʻi Island this Saturday, bringing breezy trade winds, 3 to 5 inches of rain, and 8 to 12 foot waves to east facing shores.

Starting Friday, the National Weather Service anticipates 15 to 20 waves from a separate swell coming from the southern hemisphere and may possibly issue a High Surf Warning for south facing shores of Hawaiʻi Island through Saturday.

In preparation for Darby, residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items from possible wind damage and to address flooding concerns.

Beach-goers, swimmers, and surfers are advised to  exercise caution as strong breaking waves, shore break, and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous are expected.  Beaches may be closed without notice.
