Hawai‘i Island police arrested and charged 53-year-old Kim Kanakamaikai with various offenses stemming from a domestic-related incident on Ale Road in Hawaiian Acres last Saturday.

Puna patrol officers responded to the residence for a domestic incident involving Kanakamaikai and a female who he was reportedly threatening while in possession of a handgun.

Responding officers contacted the victim who was observed to have various injuries.  She was transported to Hilo Medical Center for treatment and later released.

Although Kanakamaikai left the scene prior to police arrival, he was arrested at the Ale Road residence on Monday, August 22.

Police determined that he had struck the victim, threatened her with a firearm, and discharged the firearm towards her during the altercation. A search warrant was also served on the residence.

Yesterday after conferring with Hawai‘i County Prosecutors, detectives from the Area I Juvenile Aid Section charged Kanakamaikai with the following offenses:

  • first-degree terroristic threatening
  • first-degree reckless endangering
  • ownership prohibited
  • felony abuse of a family household member
  • misdemeanor abuse of a family household member.

Kanakamaikai’s bail was set at $42,000 and he remains in police custody pending his initial appearance in Hilo District Court scheduled for today.
