Hawaiʻi Island DUI Stats: August 22-28

During the week of August 22 through August 28, 2022, Hawai’i Island police arrested eight motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far in 2022, there have been 659 DUI arrests compared with 723 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 8.9 percent.

There have been 540 major accidents thus far in 2022 compared with 528 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.3 percent.

To date, there were 23 fatal crashes (one fatal crash reclassified on 05/30/22 due to a medical condition) resulting in 25 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one reclassified due to a medical condition), compared with 15 fatal crashes, resulting in 15 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 53.3 percent for fatal crashes, and 66.7 percent for fatalities.
