This morning at 2:04 a.m. HST, a magnitude-4.2 earthquake occurred 6 miles ENE of Pāhala at a depth of 21 miles below sea level.

The earthquake, which had no apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes, is part of the seismic swarm under the Pāhala area, which has been going on since 2019.

Aftershocks are possible in the coming days to weeks   No damage to buildings or infrastructure is expected based on the quake’s intensity.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor volcanoes for any changes.  For more information visit the HVO website.
