Big Island D.U.I. Statistics: April 17-23

During the week of April 17 through April 23, 2023, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 13 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision while none of the drivers were under the age of 21.  

Thus far in 2023, there have been 317 DUI arrests compared with 339 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.5 percent.

The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 284 major crashes so far in 2023 compared with 233 during the same period last year, an increase of 21.9 percent.  

To date, there have been seven fatal crashes, resulting in eight fatalities, (Rvsd. 2/07/23: one fatal crash reclassified—manner of death was due to natural causes and Rvsd. 4/18/23: one fatal crash on 3/07/23 added—cause of death was due to a traffic collision that occurred the day prior), and (one fatal crash had multiple deaths); compared with 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 12 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 30 percent for fatal crashes, and 33.3 percent for fatalities.
