Sheriff’s Department Warns the Public of New Scam

The Sheriff’s Department released a new alert regarding a Sheriff Impersonator and extortion scam.
In this latest reported scam, a caller, claiming to be a deputy sheriff working for the Honolulu Police Department, tells individuals that they have an outstanding federal bench warrant because they failed to appear in Federal court, and tells them to pay a fine or face arrest.
The State Sheriffs Department wants to remind the public that they will not call anyone about missed court appearances or solicit any form of payment electronically.
If Hawaii residents encounter the scam they are advised to hang up and report the incident as soon as possible.  They should also not provide credit card numbers, bank account information or other personal information to callers claiming to represent a law enforcement agency.
Anyone who receives a call, text or email matching this scam should call the Sheriff Division at 586-1352.
Other protection tips include:
• Do not communicate with unsolicited e-mail or phone text senders.
• Do not open e-mails, attachments or links sent by text from unknown individuals.
• Never provide personal information of any sort via phone, text or e-mail. Be aware that many e-mails requesting your personal information appear to be legitimate.
