Hawaiian Electric initiated 30-minute rolling outages in parts of Hawaiʻi Island yesterday morning due to the unexpected loss of several large generators.

The outages, which took place between 8:38 a.m. and 10:52 a.m., were initiated in various areas of the island to prevent loss of power to an even greater number of customers. The impacted areas and the timing of the outages were based on the amount of electric demand that needs to be reduced.

About 25,500 customers around the island were without power for about 30 to 60 minutes.

Hawaiian Electric’s combustion turbine units CT-1, CT-3 and CT-4 tripped offline and its Hill 5 unit was under repair. The island’s largest generator, Hamakua Energy, was also not at full output and underwent repairs.

Hawaiian Electric’s request to conserve energy was lifted yesterday afternoon.

The outages were not related to Monday night’s generator fire at Hawaiian Electric’s Panaewa Substation.
