The Honoka’a Intermediate School HI-PAL 5 on 5 Basketball Intramurals Tournament recently concluded with the home team taking first place with a 21-19 win over the guest team.

The tournament, which started in September 2023, was organized by HI-PAL (Hawai’i Isle Police Activities League), a Hawai’i County Police Department program where officers mentor youth in various activities.  This connection encourages teamwork, citizenship and responsibility among youth.

In a press release School Resource Officer Blake Ragocos said, “I wanted to give the students an opportunity to do something constructive during their lunch recesses,” he said.   “They really looked forward to each other’s competition and the championship game was a close one.”

The tournament attracted 10 Honoka’a Intermediate School teams and involved not only student players, but also student referees and timers.

Tournament winners include:

  • 1st Place – Ocean Kauwala-Ariyoshi, Nainoa Ahuna, Kage Yadao, Zaynen Lindsey, Luke Joaquin-Freitas
  • 2nd Place – Sky Kauwala-Ariyoshi, Kainui Kalama, Landon Derego, Calvan Dalere-Peregrino, Zane Pira-Dacquel
