The New York Yankees announced on Sunday that they have acquired veteran corner infielder J.D. Davis from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor-league infielder Jordan Groshans. Davis, 31, was designated for assignment by the Athletics last week

The acquisition comes after the Yankees recently have lost two players to injuries: Anthony Rizzo (broken forearm) and Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring strain). Rizzo broke his right forearm June 16 and is expected to be sidelined until August. Stanton, the Yankees’ primary designated hitter, strained his left hamstring Saturday and was placed on the injured list. New York called up Ben Rice from the minors to fill in at first in Rizzo’s absence.

Davis, 31, appeared in 39 games with the Athletics, batting .236/.304/.366 (96 OPS+) with four home runs and five runs batted in. Following a trade with the New York Mets, Davis spent the previous season and a half with the San Francisco Giants, where he posted a 113 OPS+ and hit 26 home runs over the course of 193 games. The Giants released Davis ahead of the start of the season after they signed free-agent third baseman Matt Chapman.
