23 year-old Kiane AsuncionWilson of Hilo was arrested and charged for DUI, driving without a license, and firearm offenses following a traffic stop on November 20, 2024.

According to police, Asuncion-Wilson was contacted by police while operating a Toyota Tacoma after reports of a reckless driver on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway. He was arrested and provided a breath sample which indicated that his breath alcohol content was 0.163 which is more than double the legal limit. Following the execution of a search warrant, officers recovered a Smith & Wesson brand 9mm semiautomatic pistol with a high-capacity magazine on the driver’s side floorboard, a Plano brand pistol case containing another high-capacity magazine, 9mm ammunition, and two spent 9mm casings. Bail was set at $73,200.00.

Asuncion-Wilson made his initial appearance in Hilo District Court on Friday afternoon where over prosecutors’ objections, he was granted supervised release and ordered to appear for a status hearing on December 19.

As the Complaint alleges, Asuncion-Wilson is charged with Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant, Driving Without a License, Place to Keep Pistol or Revolver, Place to Keep Ammunition, and Ownership Prohibited (detachable ammunition magazine with a capacity over ten rounds designed for use with a pistol). Prosecutors also alleged that AsuncionWilson was a highly intoxicated driver in that his measurable amount of alcohol was 0.15 or more grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath. Place to Keep Pistol or Revolver is a class B felony offense which carries a penalty of either a ten-year prison term or four years probation and up to eighteen months in jail. Ownership Prohibited, as charged in this case, is a class C felony offense which carries a penalty of either a five-year prison term or four years probation and up twelve months in jail.
