The Coast Guard recently medevaced an ailing man from a cruise ship 50 miles offshore Oʻahu yesterday.

Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu watchstanders received a notification from the senior doctor aboard the Zaandam, a Holland America Line cruise ship, requesting a medevac for a 32-year-old man experiencing symptoms of a stroke approximately 330 miles northeast of Oʻahu. Watchstanders consulted with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medevac.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point crew hoisted the ailing man and a nurse from the Zaandam to provide in-flight care. The crew then transported the patient to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu in reportedly stable condition.
