Update: 9:45pm

HILO, HAWAI‘I — July 19, 2025 (9:45 PM HST) — The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has officially canceled the tsunami watch for the State of Hawai‘i, effective as of 9:42 PM HST

The cancellation follows further evaluation of a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred earlier in the evening at 8:49 PM HST. The quake was centered off the east coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, at coordinates 52.5° North, 160.5° East.

Based on all available data, officials determined there is no tsunami threat to Hawai‘i. As a result, the precautionary watch that had been issued earlier has been lifted.

No further alerts related to this event are expected unless new information becomes available. Residents are encouraged to remain aware of official updates and continue to practice preparedness for all potential hazards.

HILO, HAWAI‘I — July 19, 2025 (9:15 PM HST) — A tsunami watch has been issued for the State of Hawai‘i, effective as of 9:03 PM HST, following a powerful undersea earthquake off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the earthquake struck at 8:49 PM HST with a preliminary magnitude of 7.5. The epicenter was located at 52.5° North, 160.7° East, off Kamchatka’s eastern shoreline.

Officials are currently evaluating whether a tsunami was generated. While no confirmation has been made at this time, the size and location of the quake indicate the potential for destructive tsunami waves, even at great distances from the epicenter.

If tsunami waves are generated and projected to impact Hawai‘i, the earliest possible arrival of the first wave would be approximately 2:43 AM HST on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

Residents are urged to stay tuned to local media and official sources for updates. This is a developing situation.
