
This is a Civil Defense Severe Weather Update message for Sunday 02-08-2026 06:42 PM.
On behalf of the County of Hawaii, we wish to thank all residents for your continued effort in preparing for the severe weather of flooding rains and damaging winds that the National Weather Service forecast for Hawaii Island later tonight and into tomorrow.
During this period,
It is essential that we stay off the roads, stay at home, and limit driving to essential travel ONLY.
Should you need a safe location to be at, the County has established Severe Weather Shelters at;
- Waimea Community Center in Waimea
- Hisaoka Gymnasium in North Kohala
- Honoka`a Sports Complex Gym in Honoka`a
- Papā`aloa Park Community Center in Papā`aloa
These Severe Weather Shelters will remain open until the threat has subsided.
Tomorrow, Monday, all non-essential County services and operations, including all park facilities and solid waste facilities will be closed.
Waipio Valley Access Road is closed to non-valley residents and farmers.
If you are a Hele-On Bus rider, please check with the Hele-on Bus website, if routes have been modified or cancelled for Monday.
All State offices, DOE schools, and the University of Hawaii will be closed Monday.

This is a Civil Defense Severe Weather Update for Sunday 02-08-2026 03:40 PM.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for North Kohala and Hamakua District to this evening.
A Flood Advisory means minor flooding is imminent or occurring.
- Flooding can be life-threatening. Residents in flood prone areas are asked to remain alert for flooding conditions.
- Please limit driving to essential travel ONLY.
- Do not attempt to cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot; turn around, don’t drown.
The National Weather Service has also issued a High Surf Warning for east facing shores of Hawaii Island, from Upolu Point in North Kohala to South Point in Ka`u through Tuesday.
Surf this large is dangerous and can cause injury or death.
All beach parks are closed until further notice.
You will be informed should conditions change.

This is a Civil Defense Severe Weather Update for Sunday 02-08-2026 at 10:48 AM.
The National Weather Flood Watch remains in effect for all Hawaiian Islands and the Flood Advisory for North Kohala, Hamakua, North and South Hilo, and Puna Districts remains in effect through tomorrow, Monday.
The National Weather Service High Wind Warning has been extended, to include North and South Kohala, North and South Kona, Hamakua, North and South Hilo, and Puna Districts through tomorrow, Monday.
Sustained winds of 35 MPH and gusts of up to 60 MPH are forecast.
Due to the Flood Watch, Flood Advisory, and High Wind Warning:
- All Hawaii Island residents in the effected areas are asked to stay home, postpone, and cancel outdoor activities, where possible.
- Please avoid driving. Limit travel to essential ONLY.
- Please secure boats and outdoor items.
- Stay clear of downed utility lines and trees and report all hazards to authorities.
- Avoid any activity that involves hotworks or use of open flames, such as welding, grinding, grilling, and camp fires.
