The Minnesota Vikings have brought back veteran quarterback Carson Wentz on a one-year contract, reinforcing a reshaped quarterback group ahead of a pivotal season.

Wentz, 33, returns after making five starts for Minnesota last year, stepping in when J.J. McCarthy went down with an ankle injury early in the season. He led the team to a 2–3 record, throwing for 1,216 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions while completing just over 65% of his passes. Despite playing behind an injury-plagued offensive line and enduring 19 sacks, he helped produce several of the team’s most productive offensive outings.

His season was ultimately cut short by a shoulder injury that worsened over time. After attempting to play through it—including multiple games following the initial issue—Wentz exited during a Week 8 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers and later underwent season-ending surgery. Notably, his performance was strongest before the injury became a major limitation, when he posted efficient numbers and guided the offense effectively.

Minnesota’s quarterback room now features newly signed Kyler Murray—widely expected to compete for the starting role—alongside McCarthy and Wentz. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has not yet committed to a starter, leaving open competition heading into training camp. Wentz’s experience gives him a strong case for the backup role, while also providing insurance if injuries arise again.

Meanwhile, younger quarterback Max Brosmer, who struggled in limited action as a rookie, is likely to face an uphill battle to secure a roster spot as Minnesota’s quarterback competition takes shape in the months ahead.
