During the week of March 16, through March 22, 2026, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far in 2026, there have been 182 DUI arrests compared with 213 during the same period in 2025, a decrease of 14.55 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 232 major crashes so far this year, compared with 224 major crashes during the same time last year, an increase of 3.57 percent.
As of March 22, there have been four fatal crashes, resulting in four fatalities compared with seven fatal crashes, resulting in eight fatalities for the same time last year. This is a decrease of 42.86 percent for fatal crashes and a decrease of 50 percent for fatalities.
In 2026, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) was zero, compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year.
