During the week of April 6, through April 12, 2026, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Thirteen of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far in 2026, there have been 242 DUI arrests compared with 273 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.36 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 284 major crashes so far this year, compared with 286 major crashes during the same time last year, a decrease of 0.70 percent.
As of April 12, 2026, there have been 4 fatal crashes, resulting in 4 fatalities compared with 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities for the same time last year. This is a decrease of 55.56 percent for fatal crashes and a decrease of 60 percent for fatalities.
In 2026, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) was zero, compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year.
