During the week of April 27, through May 3, 2026, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 11 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far in 2026, there have been 284 DUI arrests compared with 316 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.13 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 334 major crashes so far this year, compared with 351 major crashes during the same time last year, a decrease of 4.84 percent.
As of May 3, there have been 6 fatal crashes, resulting in 7 fatalities compared with 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities for the same time last year. This is a decrease of 40 percent for fatal crashes and a decrease of 36.36 percent for fatalities.
