Andrei Svechnikov netted the decisive goal 14:06 into overtime, lifting the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre and securing a 2-1 edge in the best-of-seven matchup.
Carolina established the upper hand early when defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere capitalized on a loose puck in the slot just over eight minutes into the opening frame. However, the Canadiens responded before the first intermission, with blueliner Mike Matheson beating goaltender Frederik Andersen to even the score.
The physical battle intensified in the second period, with Montreal pulling ahead momentarily on a power-play tally by young defenseman Lane Hutson. Carolina didn’t stay down for long, answering less than a minute later via a Taylor Hall strike to tie the game at 2-2.
The final period turned into a defensive showcase, characterized by high-stakes review drama and heavy shot differentials. A potential go-ahead goal for Montreal was wiped away following an offside challenge, while Carolina stifled the Canadiens’ offense, allowing only two shots on goal across the entire third frame and the extra period combined. Despite the lack of offensive volume, Montreal had golden opportunities early in overtime—including a Nick Suzuki breakaway that missed the net and a Mike Matheson shot that rattled off the crossbar—but they simply couldn’t find the finishing touch.

Ultimately, Carolina’s relentless pressure paid off. Svechnikov won a possession battle along the boards, worked the puck down low, and eventually fired the game-winner through traffic past Montreal netminder Jakub Dobes. Dobes turned away 35 shots in a stellar performance for the hosts, while Andersen earned the win with an 11-save night.
With the victory, the Hurricanes remain undefeated in postseason overtime games this year. The Canadiens will look to even up the series on home ice when both teams return to the Bell Centre for Game 4.
